York Region, often cited as one of the most livable regions in the GTA, is made up of 9 cities and towns: Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora, Markham, Newmarket, Georgina, Whitchurch-Stouffville, East Gwillimbury, and King. School rankings by the Fraser Institute, an independent non-partisan research and educational organization based in Canada, indicate that a lot of elementary schools in this region routinely score highly in terms of students’ academic performance. The rankings are based on the annual Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results, which measure performance in reading, writing, and math skills. Without further ado, here is the list of the top elementary schools in York Region:

 

1) St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School in Unionville, Markham

St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School is ranked 1st place with a Fraser Institute score of 10 out of 10, beating over 3,000 other elementary schools in Ontario. St. Justin Martyr Elementary School opened its doors in 1988, and is located in the residential neighbourhood of Highway 7 and Warden Avenue. 2) William Berczy Public School in Unionville, Markham

William Berczy Public School is tied in 1st place with St. Justin Martry Catholic Elementary School. It serves students from Junior Kindergarten (JK) to Grade 8.

 

3) Silver Stream Public School in Richmond Hill

Not only is Silver Stream Public School ranked in the top 10 in York Region, it is also ranked 17 in all of Ontario, with a score of 9.9. The school officially opened in 2002, and is named after a significant geographic feature in the area, Silver Stream. There are approximately 625 students from JK to Grade 8. The school offers regular and special education programs, including a community class program for gifted students from neighbouring schools. The gifted program offers classes for grades 4 to 8.

 

4) Christ the King Catholic Elementary School in Richmond Hill

The high ranking of students in Christ the King Catholic Elementary School is often attributed to the strong teacher and staff support that promotes independent and collaborative-style learning.

 

5) Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys Catholic Elementary School in Markham

With a score of 9.8, Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys is also in the top 20 provincially. Teachers utilize a variety of teaching and assessment techniques to determine the strengths and needs of learners. Data is collected and examined to create best teaching strategies. Staff receive professional development on how to integrate data from standardized test scores into teaching practices.

During the 2005-2006 school year, the school purchased new materials to support programs that provide information on bullying and literacy improvement, including the “Steps to Respect” program. Extra-curriculars offered at this school include choir, cross country, badminton, soccer, volleyball, track and field. There is also a Health Action Team on site, consisting of staff, pupils, and public health nurse.
